Cattle

During the autumn and winter months, continental steer calves are bought in at 3 weeks old and are started on milk for approximately 6 weeks until they are weaned onto calf coursemix. They are reared in batches of 30 so that management and animal health can be closely monitored at all times. There is sufficient housing to keep 120 calves each year.


In the spring all cattle are given a long acting wormer then turned out to grass for the summer months on clover mixed grasses in their groups of 30, for ease of grassland management and TB testing. At the end of the summer all cattle are brought in for over winter housing and are fed grass silage and a wheat, barley feed mix including molasses and proteins. Westfield farm has a finishing unit with capacity of up to 200 head of cattle. The oldest groups of cattle are sold to abattoirs as and when they are ready to market.

Sheep

There is a breeding flock of 350 welsh mule ewes. They run with pedigree Charolais and Suffolk rams during the autumn months, lambing in March and April every year. All lambing is done indoors starting with the ewes and finishing with replacement ewe lambs. The welsh mules are prolific breeders in a lowland system with good mothering ability and milk production. Lambs are reared on mother’s milk and grass in the summer. They are usually ready for sale from July onwards once they reach 40 kg in weight. They are sold deadweight to supply Welsh supermarkets.


Store lambs are bought in at the start of November from the Uplands to graze over winter forage crops including forage rape and swedes.
